Chris Wilson

I’m Chris Wilson, the creator of Castaway Chris. I write wildlife travel guides for people who want practical, honest advice about safaris, national parks, animal encounters, nature trips, and planning travel around wildlife experiences.

I also have a travel vlog on YouTube.

Wildlife travel can be one of the most memorable ways to see the world, but it can also be expensive, seasonal, and hard to compare. A safari lodge, rainforest trip, national park, or animal encounter may sound amazing, but the real experience depends on timing, location, budget, access, ethics, safety, and what kind of wildlife you are hoping to see.

My goal with Castaway Chris is to help readers make better decisions before committing time and money to a wildlife-focused trip.

Why I Started Castaway Chris

I created Castaway Chris to help travelers think more clearly about wildlife travel.

A lot of safari and wildlife content makes every destination sound once-in-a-lifetime. Some places really are incredible, but not every trip is right for every traveler.

When I write a guide, I try to answer practical questions like:

When is the best time to go?

What animals are you most likely to see?

Is this better for a first safari or a return trip?

How expensive is it likely to be?

Is it worth traveling out of the way for?

What kind of traveler is this best for?

What should you be careful about before booking?

That practical point of view is the heart of Castaway Chris.

My Wildlife Travel Perspective

I’ve traveled to wildlife-focused places where the real experience depends on patience, timing, guides, weather, and logistics. In Borneo, I visited places like Sepilok, the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the Kinabatangan River, and Bako National Park. Those kinds of trips made me appreciate how different wildlife travel feels from normal sightseeing.

You are not just checking off attractions. You are dealing with boat rides, early mornings, heat, rain, muddy trails, animal movement, local guides, and the reality that sightings are never guaranteed.

That experience shapes the way I write about safaris, national parks, rainforest trips, marine wildlife, birding destinations, and animal-focused itineraries. I care about the parts of a trip that actually affect the experience: seasonality, animal movement, weather, accessibility, lodge choice, guides, transportation, park logistics, safety, and how much time you realistically need.

Wildlife travel is not always predictable. Animals move, weather changes, roads can be rough, and sightings are never guaranteed. I try to write in a way that respects that uncertainty instead of overselling the experience.

How I Write Castaway Chris Guides

When I create or update a guide, I focus on practical wildlife travel decisions.

I usually look at:

  • Best times of year for wildlife viewing
  • Which animals or experiences a destination is known for
  • Safari and national park logistics
  • Costs, lodges, tours, permits, and transportation when relevant
  • Safety, weather, access, and comfort level
  • Whether a place is better for first-time visitors or more experienced travelers
  • Honest tradeoffs, including when a destination may be expensive, remote, seasonal, crowded, or not right for every trip

For changing details, I try to use reliable sources and recommend verifying current information before booking. This matters especially for park rules, permits, lodge availability, travel advisories, seasonal access, conservation areas, and tour operations.

What I Usually Focus On

Castaway Chris is written for travelers who want practical wildlife advice, not vague inspiration.

I usually focus on:

  • Safari planning
  • Wildlife destinations
  • National parks and reserves
  • Animal-focused travel experiences
  • Best times to visit
  • Trip costs and logistics
  • Ethical and realistic expectations
  • What is worth prioritizing on a limited trip

My goal is not to make every wildlife trip sound perfect. My goal is to help you choose the right trip for your budget, timing, comfort level, and wildlife goals.

My Approach to Accuracy

Wildlife travel information can change quickly. Park rules, entry fees, permits, lodge options, road conditions, travel advisories, weather patterns, and seasonal animal movement can all affect a trip.

Because of that, I try to write guides that are practical and honest without pretending every detail is fixed. When something can change, I do my best to either keep it updated or remind readers to confirm the latest details before booking.

If you notice something on Castaway Chris that looks outdated, unclear, or incorrect, I appreciate the heads-up. Keeping the site useful and accurate matters to me.
