I’ve spent time exploring Thailand for its nature, beaches, and mountain trails. The best months to visit are November through April, during the dry season, when the weather is clear and ideal for hiking and diving.
Northern Thailand
Chiang Mai and Pai are my favorite areas for hiking and slower travel. The mountains around Chiang Mai are full of trails that lead to waterfalls, small villages, and viewpoints above the clouds. In Pai, I rent a scooter to explore caves, hot springs, and rice fields. The region has a relaxed pace, and the cool evenings make it perfect for outdoor travel.
Chiang Rai is another good stop, with access to hill tribe areas and nature reserves. I visit the White Temple and the surrounding countryside, which feels quiet and far from the tourist centers in the south.
Southern Thailand and the Islands
Thailand’s southern coast is known for diving and island travel. The Andaman Sea has some of the best reefs in the region. I base myself in Koh Lanta or Koh Lipe for scuba diving and snorkeling trips. The Similan Islands are world-class for diving, with clear water, coral walls, and whale shark sightings during the season.
The Gulf of Thailand offers calmer seas around Koh Tao, which is one of the most affordable places in Asia to get scuba certified. I keep a few days free between dives to relax or explore nearby beaches and small towns.
National Parks and Nature
Thailand has over a hundred national parks. Khao Sok is one of my favorites, with limestone cliffs, lakes, and jungle lodges that sit right on the water. I usually join a guided hike or kayak trip there since the forest is dense and wildlife can be hard to spot alone. Elephants, gibbons, and hornbills are common sightings.
Travel Tips for Visitors
I move between regions by train or short domestic flights. Overnight trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai are comfortable and save time. For islands, ferries and speedboats run daily during high season. I carry cash for smaller towns, and insect repellent for hikes and jungle stays.
