Philippines

I’ve spent time exploring the Philippines, a country of more than seven thousand islands. The best months to visit are December through May, during the dry season, when seas are calmer and travel between islands is easier. The mix of beaches, coral reefs, and rainforest makes it one of the best destinations in Southeast Asia for nature and diving.

Islands and Coastal Adventures

I spend most of my time in Palawan, Bohol, and Cebu. Palawan is known for its limestone cliffs and turquoise lagoons. El Nido and Coron both have good snorkeling, island-hopping, and wreck diving. Bohol has clear water and the Chocolate Hills inland, while Cebu offers whale shark snorkeling in Oslob and easy ferries to nearby islands.

For quieter spots, Siargao is great for surfing and small-town life, and Camiguin has volcanoes, waterfalls, and hot springs all within a short drive. Each island has its own rhythm, and traveling by ferry or short flights makes it easy to see more than one during a trip.

Exploring Nature and Marine Life

The Philippines is one of the best countries for diving. Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea is world-famous but only reachable by liveaboard during the dry months. Apo Island and Moalboal are easier to reach and have healthy reefs, sea turtles, and schools of sardines close to shore. Inland, I spend time hiking to waterfalls and visiting small mountain villages where rice terraces climb the hillsides.

How I Plan My Trips

I usually fly into Manila or Cebu and connect to smaller airports for island travel. Domestic flights are frequent but can get delayed by weather, so I plan buffer days. Cash is essential in small towns, and I bring enough pesos for boats, food, and entry fees. I always carry reef-safe sunscreen and a dry bag for ferry rides and island tours.
