I’ve spent time traveling through Greece, from the islands to the mountains. The best months to visit are May through October. Spring and fall are warm but not crowded, and the sea is calm enough for ferry travel.
Where I Go in Greece
Athens is where I always start. The Acropolis and its museum are easy to see in a day, and walking through Plaka gives a good sense of the city’s vibe. From there, ferries head out to the islands such as Santorini, Naxos, and Paros. Each island has its own feeling.
Crete feels like its own country. I’ve driven across it to see old ruins, mountain villages, and beaches that stretch for miles. In the north, Chania and Rethymno have long waterfronts and alleys that are best explored on foot.
How I Plan Trips Here
I usually book ferries a few weeks ahead during summer, but outside July and August it’s easy to buy tickets a day before. In Athens, I stay near the metro for easy access to the port and main sites. Renting a car on Crete or the Peloponnese helps reach smaller towns and beaches.
Cash still matters in small villages, and it’s smart to carry a few euros for cafes and bakeries. Tap water is fine to drink on the mainland but not on most islands.
