Costa Rica Travel Guide

Costa Rica is one of the best countries for wildlife and outdoor travel in Central America. The best months to visit are December through April, during the dry season, when roads are easier to drive and most parks are open.

Key Regions and Parks

San José is the main entry point, but most travelers head straight for the coast or rainforest. Manuel Antonio National Park is known for beaches and easy wildlife spotting. Monteverde offers cloud forest hikes and canopy tours. Arenal has volcano views and hot springs. The Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park are the most remote and full of wildlife.

On the Caribbean side, Tortuguero is famous for sea turtle nesting and canal tours through rainforest waterways. Puerto Viejo offers a relaxed surf culture and a mix of Afro-Caribbean food and music.

On the Pacific coast, Nosara has consistent surf breaks, yoga retreats, and long open beaches. Nearby, Santa Teresa and Tamarindo are popular with surfers and travelers looking for small beach towns with good restaurants and nightlife.

Travel Tips for Visitors

Renting a 4×4 helps if you plan to visit multiple regions or drive to rural lodges. Roads can be steep and unpaved outside main towns. Book national park entries online in advance, especially for Manuel Antonio and Corcovado.

Bring lightweight clothing, rain gear, and insect repellent. U.S. dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but it’s good to carry small bills in local currency for local markets or rural areas.

Costa Rica focuses on ecotourism, so look for certified sustainable lodges and guided tours that support conservation.
