Honduras Travel Guide

I’ve spent time diving in Honduras, mostly around Roatán and Utila. These islands are part of the Bay Islands in the Caribbean, and they’re some of the best places in the world for affordable scuba diving. The best months to visit are February through June when the water is clear and calm.

Diving Around Roatán and Utila

Roatán has a wide barrier reef with healthy coral, walls, and shipwrecks. The West End is where most dive shops and boats operate, and it’s easy to find budget accommodation nearby. Marine life includes sea turtles, moray eels, reef sharks, and large schools of tropical fish. The island has a mix of dive resorts and small locally run operations that offer packages for beginners through advanced divers.

Utila is smaller, cheaper, and even more focused on diving. It’s one of the best places in the Caribbean to get certified. Dive schools line the main street, and the island is known for relaxed backpacker energy. The reefs here are close to shore, and whale shark sightings are common between March and May.

How I Plan Trips Here

I usually fly into Roatán directly or connect through San Pedro Sula. From Roatán, a short ferry ride reaches Utila. I book accommodation that includes or partners with a dive center since it’s usually cheaper and easier to plan dives that way.

Cash is still important on both islands, and ATMs can run out quickly, so I bring enough for a few days. Tap water isn’t drinkable, so I buy bottled or filtered water. Between dives, I spend time snorkeling, kayaking, and visiting the local beaches away from the crowds.
